Some places leave a lasting impression long after you’ve left. Not because of the buildings. Not because of the scenery. But because of the people. When I visited Ya Bana Village in South Africa, I met Mama Carina whose story reminded me that lasting change doesn’t begin with money or resources. It begins with a dream. Or perhaps, in this case, with two women who dared to dream together.
A Shared Dream
The story of Ya Bana Village didn’t begin with buildings or fundraising. It began with two women who met while volunteering in a township, caring for orphaned and vulnerable children. Every day they witnessed children growing up in circumstances that no child should experience. Instead of accepting what they saw, they began imagining something different.
Mama Carina told me:
“We dreamed of a place where children could grow up between beauty and with love.”
She also spoke about Mama Becky with so much warmth. “We are like sisters,” she said.
“We love spending time together to talk, plan and dream.”
Those conversations planted the seed for what would eventually become Ya Bana Village.
When a Dream Finds People Who Believe
Dreams need people who believe in them.
After first visiting Mabopane in 1998, Mama Becky founded the Mabopane Foundation in 2003 together with many committed volunteers and supporters in the United States. Their mission was simple but ambitious: To support vulnerable children in South Africa by creating lasting opportunities instead of temporary solutions.
Together with local leaders, volunteers and the surrounding community, they started turning that shared dream into reality. Looking at the photo of the Mabopane Foundation volunteers, I realised something. Real change is never created by one person. It happens when people from different countries, cultures and backgrounds decide to believe in the same vision.
Twenty Years Later: A Thriving Community
In 2006, Ya Bana Village officially became a reality. Today, twenty years later, that dream has grown into a thriving community. Children grow up in family homes instead of institutions. Young people receive education, care and guidance. The Early Learning Centre provides young children from the surrounding community with a safe environment where they can learn, play and develop during their most important early years. House mothers, teachers, staff, volunteers and partners work side by side to create a place filled with safety, dignity and hope. Their impact extends far beyond the village itself. Through community initiatives such as the Moola Project, local families are encouraged to collect recyclable waste in exchange for rewards, creating cleaner neighbourhoods while promoting dignity, responsibility and opportunity.
Walking through the village, it is hard to imagine that all of this began with a conversation between two women who simply believed children deserved something better.
Why This Story Matters to Me
This story touched me and inspires me to keep going, even when the road isn’t always easy. They have taught me more than they probably realise, and I hope to keep learning from them for many years to come. Real impact doesn’t start by arriving with answers. It starts by listening. By respecting local knowledge. By standing beside people who have dedicated years of their lives to their own communities.
During my journey through South Africa and Zimbabwe, I realised something. The people changing the world are often not the loudest. They are the ones quietly showing up every single day, people like Mama Carina and Mama Becky. Ya Bana Village reminds me that sustainable change is built through patience, partnerships and people who continue showing up, even when no one is watching.

Building a Movement Together
Their story perfectly reflects why I started FairestBnb. Our mission is not to replace local organisations. Our mission is connecting people who have professional skills and an open heart with organisations that have already proven their impact. People who understand that meaningful change is created together. Because when local passion meets international knowledge, imagine what could happen.

This is Only the Beginning
This is the first story from my journey through South Africa and Zimbabwe. Over the coming weeks I will introduce you to more remarkable people who dedicate their lives to building stronger communities. Every story will be different. But they all begin the same way. With ordinary people who decided to care.
And perhaps, one day, you’ll decide to become part of that story too.
